A semi-trailer in the westbound lane of 23rd Street near Louisiana Street seemingly suffered a malfunction on Wednesday afternoon. Cans of soda were spilling out of the trailer onto the roadway.

(Editor’s Note: Another passerby from the scene has now reported the spilled cans actually were of beer, not soda. The exact nature of the spilled cargo is not clear from the conflicting information we currently we have. We have asked for additional details from the Lawrence Police Department.)

A Lawrence semi-truck driver on Wednesday had plenty of Cokes, but likely had few smiles as some sort of malfunction with the trailer led to lots of cans of soda pop spilling onto 23rd Street.

The incident on 23rd Street near Louisiana Street caused a midday back up of vehicles in the westbound lane of 23rd Street, as traffic was reduced to one lane in the area.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the malfunction, but the front wall of the semi-trailer appeared to split open allowing the cans of cola to slide out the front of the trailer and onto the roadway.

The Journal-World has sought additional information from the Lawrence Police Department about the incident.
